Obituary for Sister Joan Steans, CSJP

Sister Joan, CSJP, 90, died peacefully on September 23, 2018. She was born on February 12, 1928 in Hackensack, NJ to the late William B. Steans and Emelie M. Beck Steans.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace at St. Michael Villa Novitiate, Englewood Cliffs, NJ on September 12, 1955, and pronounced final vows on August 22, 1961.
Sr. Joan was an artist and art teacher prior to entrance into the Congregation, taught at secondary schools in Ho-Ho-Kus and Washington Township, and at Englewood Cliffs College. In 1968, she joined the faculty of Jersey City State College as an Associate Professor of Art until her retirement in 1998. Sr. Joan, who also served per province as Director of Peace and Justice, co-founded the Genesis Project, providing social services to the homeless in Journal Square, Jersey City. Sister retired to St. Michael Villa in 2007.
Sister was predeceased by her sister, Rita Rice and niece, Rita Peterson. She is survived by her nieces; Patricia Donofrio and Susan Rice, and cousin, Theodora Darling.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 26, from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. at St. Michael Villa, 399 Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, September 27, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael Villa Chapel. Burial will be a Holy Cross Cemetery, No. Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, Shalom Center, 399 Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632.
